Get a free cookie on Indianapolis Macaron Day

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Downtown’s Macaron Bar, which opened last fall, is the driving force behind a sugary Saturday celebration.

Ten bakeries across Marion County will join the celebration and give away free cookies.

Macaron Day started in France 15 years ago, and macarons themselves date back to the 1500’s.They’re getting more popular stateside and here in Indiana.

Kim McDaniels of Macaron Bar said, “Now it’s nice to see, we have consistent customers, we have regulars that come in.”

Jam or cream is sandwiched between two almond-powdered cookies. As for flavors, it’s not your average chocolate or vanilla. McDaniels said they have favors including lemon lavender and Earl Grey tea.

But, this day is more than just a free cookie. It’s also a chance for residents to do some good.

Money made at the bakeries Saturday will benefit the Crooked Creek Food Pantry in Pike Township. It serves more than a thousand families a month and is thrilled with the support.

Pantry director Steve Claffey said, “I was a baker in the Army, so I’m particularly thrilled that it’s a set of bakeries that have chosen us.”

About 2,000 people have expressed interest on Facebook for Saturday’s event, so plan your Macaron adventures early.

On your first stop, don’t forget to pick up a Macaron Day passport at any of the bakeries. For each free cookie you get, you’ll receive a stamp.

A minimum of seven stamps will earn you a free Macaron Day T-shirt, so you can relive the sweet day all year.
