Hoosiers donate tons of water, thousands of dollars to help Flint

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Nearly 10 tons of water and more than $9,000 have been donated by people living in the Hoosier State to help those living in Flint, Michigan.

The water and money were donated during Saturday’s BeneFlint concert, which featured more than a dozen local bands and artists.

Admission was either a case of water, a gallon of water, or a minimum donation of $5. There was also a live auction at the event.

All of the donations were taken to Flint, MI in a moving truck, donated by Penske, on Sunday. Penske also donated the miles and insurance coverage.

Organizer Kyle Perkon said BeneFlint was a classic example of Hoosier hospitality, especially since the event was organized in a matter of days.

Perkon said, “These bands didn’t have to play for no money. These artists didn’t have to dedicate their full time. But they did because they wanted another city to benefit.”

Diane Woodruff, a coordinator for the United Way of Genessee County, was also at the BeneFlint.

She said, “It’s been amazing seeing the outpouring of support from across the nation. And when you hear about these things that are going one and how quickly it escalated to how big it is, what the guys have done with it it’s just been amazing.”

Perkon said he will stay in touch with Woodruff and continue to help where he can. He also thanks all of the volunteers and those who donated for their support.
