How two guys from Kokomo captured breathtaking aerial tornado video

GREENTOWN, Ind. (WISH) -Two drone operators from Kokomo said people from Indiana to Ireland are asking to use storm video they shot Monday night.

The video shows a massive funnel cloud in Howard County.

Dustin Wright and Seth Mote run a company called NightHawk Productions. They decided to shoot drone video of storms for the first time Monday.

The video they captured is racking up thousands of views.

“That’s a once in a lifetime experience, to capture something like that,” Wright said.

Wright and Mote said they started to drive home, then they noticed the funnel. They sent the drone up with a rush of adrenaline.

Adrenaline turned to stress when Wright thought of his loved ones living nearby.

“I kind of had a sinking feeling,” Wright said.

“I told him, you need to get on the phone and call your sister. It looked like it was going right toward Greentown,” Mote said.

It took more than 20 minutes, but Wright got a hold of his dad who told him the family’s safe. Wright then shifted his attention to the video.

Wright and Mote said they’re not just impressed by the funnel, but by the police officers seen speeding down the road in the footage.

“Those guys that serve our community, they’re actually heading into the eye of the storm,” Mote said.

The business partners say they stood about a mile from the funnel. They say, at one point, the drone flew so close they feared the wind was pulling it away.

“Being a mile away, you could feel the winds come from behind you and everything went right towards the tornado,” Mote said.

“We saw it form and dissipate, right before our eyes,” Wright said.

Wright and Mote said the storm isn’t quite the coolest thing they’ve shot with the drone.

They said the storm’s memorable, but nothing tops the honor of capturing the funeral procession for Howard County deputy Carl Koontz, who died in March.
