Human Mario Kart comes to Fountain Square

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A popular video game was brought to life Friday night in Fountain Square. Dozens dressed up and drove tricycles for “Human Mario Kart.”

“Most everyone remembers playing Mario Kart as a kid, so it’s pretty awesome to get to do it in real life,” said Josh Baker. Baker is the owner of Do317, the organization that helped put this event together.

“There are 24 teams all riding these trikes around a Mario inspired course here in Fountain Square. It’s complete with power ups and points. All the fun things that you remember from the game,” explained Baker.

Spectators could buy water balloons to throw at the racers. Those balloons were meant to be the turtle shells that slow characters down in the video game, Mario Kart.

Baker said spots for the race filled up fast. He says 24 teams registered, that’s a total of around 80 drivers.

The event was designed to be fun, but winners went home with the grand prize of a Super Nintendo gaming system, the Mario Kart game to go with it, and a case of beer.
