Man killed in police shooting near Winton Avenue on Indy’s northwest side
Latest: The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the man who died as 31-year-old Luis Duran-Ruano.
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man is dead after being shot in a police shooting on Indianapolis’ northwest side Sunday night.
The man’s name and age haven’t been released.
The officers who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave immediately following the incident.
Just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the 3300 block of Georgetown Road on a report of shots fired.
When police arrived, they found a possible suspect, who was identified as a Hispanic male driving in the area. Officers tried to make a traffic stop, but the suspect fled the area.
A short pursuit followed, ending in the 3200 block of Winton Avenue. While police set up a perimeter, the male exited his car armed with a gun. Police say he then held the gun to his head while standing in front of a residence, leading officers to try to de-escalate the situation.
IMPD SWAT was then called to the scene.
SWAT operators were dispatched to the area. After an hour of back and forth between the suspect and IMPD, he left the porch of the residence and began walking northbound.
According to IMPD, SWAT operators deployed nonlethal projectiles while the suspect simultaneously fired shots. Officers returned fire and struck the suspect.
Officers and medics immediately helped the male until he was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead by medical staff.
Investigators said Winton Avenue will be closed for several hours while officers and detectives investigate the scene.
