1 dead, 2 injured after ‘catastrophic’ home explosion in Jeffersonville
JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — One person has died and two people were seriously injured in a home explosion in Jeffersonville Sunday morning, Jeffersonville authorities said.
Police and firefighters were dispatched to a home in the 900 block of Senate Avenue at 4:58 a.m. after reports of a structure fire with a possible explosion.
When authorities arrived they found three people at the scene who had suffered injuries. Police confirmed one of those victims died. The other two who were injured were taken to University of Louisville Hospital in serious condition.
The identities of the victims have not been released. It is unclear at this time if the victims are related.
Sgt. Justin Ames with the Jeffersonville Fire Department said the blast damaged 15-20 homes, eight of which are not structurally sound. Sgt. Ames considered the blast to be “catastrophic” saying the home was leveled.
Residents who lived nearly five miles away from the home told authorities they felt the blast when it happened.
Both the Jeffersonville Fire Department and the Jeffersonville Police Department are investigating to determine what caused the explosion.
Police are also investigating to rule out any criminal activity connected to the explosion.
Sgt. Ames said cleanup is underway now, however it’s hard to tell how long that process will take.
