Prosecutor clears officers in Bedford, Indiana police shooting
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Bedford police officers who fatally shot a suspect in late September have been cleared of any wrongdoing, prosecutors said.
The officers’ actions in the Sept. 28 police shooting that killed 47-year-old Daymond Hubbard were justified, Prosecutor Samuel Arp II announced Thursday.
Hubbard was fatally wounded after attempting to hit an officer with his SUV during a police chase.
“Hubbard…placed his vehicle in drive, turned his vehicle in the direction of a responding officer who was on foot, and rapidly accelerated,” Arp said in a statement.
Responding officers fired their weapons, striking Hubbard and the SUV, the prosecutor says.
Hubbard was given first aid at the scene but did not survive.
Arp says a postmortem toxicology report showed a blood alcohol level above the legal limit and indicated the presence of amphetamine.
“After reviewing the above reference information, it is my determination that the officers’ actions in this incident were justified in the preservation of life,” Arp said in closing.
