Indy Zoo welcomes two orangutans

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis Zoo is welcoming two orangutans.

38-year-old Kim and her baby Max moved to the Indy Zoo from the Jackson Zoo in Mississippi.

According to a release from the zoo, 9-month-old Max was showing signs of slow development.

Because of the Zoo’s state-of-the-art facilities, expert veterinary staff, skilled ape caretakers, and management philosophy, Indy was selected to provide a new home for the two.

Kim and Max have lived in the former orangutan facility since their arrival. The facility provides indoor and outdoor access.

The Indy Zoo says Kim was overweight upon her arrival, and has since lost weight over the last 10 weeks. Her mobility has increased.

Max is also responding well with an increase in his appetite, activity and coordination.

The two will soon be moved into the Simon Skiodt International Orangutan Center. The Zoo says the two may not be visible to visitors until Kim is comfortable with the change.
