IndyGo asking taxpayers for $21 million to complete the Red Line

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – IndyGo wants taxpayers to shell out $21 million for a new red line.

That’s $21 million on top of the $75 million the Federal government announced it would give IndyGo to pay for the project.

There was a public meeting Saturday to discuss the proposal.

People had the opportunity to ask questions about the Red Line.

If approved, the line would be 35 miles that runs from Westfield through downtown Indianapolis and down to Greenwood.

“The City-County council will have to vote to call a referendum. Their deadline to do that is May 31. If that vote is successful at the City-County Council level, then there would be a question on the Nov. 2016 ballot,” Bryan Luellen of IndyGo said. “If a majority of Marion County voters approve the referendum on the November ballot then we can build this out in five years.”

Construction on the line will start next year. The first phase will run from Broad Ripple to  the University of Indianapolis.

Two more public meetings will be held this month.
