Mayor: Stevanato brings momentum for life sciences in Fishers
FISHERS, Ind. (Inside INdiana Business) — The mayor of Fishers says Italy-based Stevanato Group’s planned $145 million manufacturing plant is adding to a continued focus on the life sciences sector in the city. The company announced this week it would build a 370,000-square-foot plant on about 30 acres of land and create more than 230 jobs by the end of 2025. Scott Fadness says there is another 45 acres adjacent to the site that the city will use to attract more life sciences companies.
In an interview with Inside INdiana Business, Fadness said the city seeks to add to central Indiana’s robust life sciences community.
“We have this unusual combination of people with a deep bench, so to speak, in life sciences, while at the same time, we’re really good, quite frankly, in Indiana about making things,” Fadness says. So, there’s this convergence of a need for increasing the pipeline and the ability to produce life science products that I think central Indiana should be outworking collectively to bring here as soon as possible.”
Fadness says the city has been working quietly over the last several months to find ways to attract more life sciences companies to Fishers. He says the area at 126th Street and Cumberland Road, where Stevanato’s plant will be built, was a prime location for this type of development.
“I think over the last year as we realized the needs of a company like Stevanato and then the momentum that we’ve seen in the life sciences industry, frankly, we really found that that was the right identity at the right time for that piece of property.”
The Stevanato plant will be used to produce the company’s EZ-Fill syringes and vials for pharmaceutical companies. The company plans to begin construction later this year, with operations beginning in 2023.
Fadness says the city has “a number of great opportunities” that are being pursued.
“Our focus right now is helping Stevanato get up and off the ground as soon as possible, but Megan Baumgartner, our economic development director, myself and others will be working with the development community as well as businesses almost immediately to try to find additional folks to go into that [remaining space].”
Stevanato is not the first life sciences company to choose Fishers for expansion. Last year, INCOG BioPharma Services detailed plans to invest $60 million to build its new global headquarters and create up to 150 jobs.
The contract development and manufacturing organization is constructing the 80,000-square-foot building at 116th Street near I-69, just a short drive from where Stevanato will be located.
