Kindergarten teacher dies in bicycle crash

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) — An Indianapolis elementary school teacher was hit and killed Wednesday morning while riding a bicycle.

A Marion County Coroner’s Office official said Thursday 38-year-old Erika Wells died in the accident on State Road 37 in Greenwood.

Wells was a kindergarten teacher at Rhoades Elementary, the school released the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Rhoades Elementary kindergarten teacher Erika Wells Erika was an amazing educator at Rhoades Elementary School, and made a significant impact on the students who were fortunate enough to have her as a teacher during the last 15 years. She will be greatly missed by her students and fellow staff members. Grief counselors are available at Rhoades Elementary Thursday for the school’s staff and students.”

The box truck driver that hit Wells, 56-year-old David Fields, stayed on scene and was not taken into custody.
