Last known living search dog from 9/11 celebrates 16th birthday

NEW YORK CITY (WISH) – The last known living search dog who worked at Ground Zero after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks celebrated her sweet 16.

Bretagne (Britney), a golden retriever, and her owner helped with rescue efforts 14 years ago as members of “Texas Task Force One.”

The pet company BarkPost said once they heard about her story, they wanted to make sure Bretagne had the best day of her life.

BarkPost is a New York based company that offers monthly BarkBox subscriptions for dogs. It also has a video series called Dog’s Best Day. It’s purpose aims to give dogs the best 24 hours of their lives.

For Bretagne, they welcomed the newly 16-year-old to New York City for her birthday. They provided her with a suite at a dog-friendly hotel, a personalized birthday billboard in Times Square, and a big birthday party complete with cake.

Today, Bretagne is the rarest of breeds. That is because all of the 300 or so known search dogs who worked the pile at Ground Zero have died.
