INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each and every week Dick Wolfsie shares an interesting and exciting story that has a special connection to central Indiana.

This week, we begin our “Best of Dick Wolfsie” series, looking back at some of his favorite stories.

Back in 2017, Dick ran into a whole bunch of cuteness down at Eskenazi Health when he encountered 18 puppies from Ultimate Canine. The dogs serve as service dogs.

“We go to hospitals, day cares, nursing homes, birthday parties,” said JoDale Benz with Ultimate Canine. “We want them in a variety of settings. There’s a window of opportunity for these puppies to learn new things and so that when they’re older as a service dog they say ‘oh crowds of people, no biggie. I did that at five weeks.’”

The pups serve at hospitals, day cares, nursing homes, birthday parties and anywhere someone might be in need of a smile.

“Everybody gets so excited when we have puppy day and it’s therapy for them as well, so it’s a win-win situation,” said Benz.

The Ultimate Canine program is still going on at Eskenazi Hospital.
