INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Attention early risers: your snapshot of the morning news, weather, and sports is ready for your ears. The Daybreak Drive-IN podcast posts every day before 5 a.m.

Key highlights from the August 23 pod:

  • Our early-morning snapshot of the day’s news, weather, and sports starts with a new overnight shooting that left one person dead in the far northwest side of Indianapolis. It happened on Wesleyan Road, in the College Park area — just off Michigan Road. No word about what happened ahead of the gunfire.

  • IMPD has released bodycam video of a deadly shooting by officers. The scene was a traffic stop just north of Washington Park on Aug. 3. The video shows a verbal exchange between Officer Douglas Correll and Gary Harrell, and then Harrell going back to his car, emerging with a gun and a phone and running off. Correll yells for him to “stop it, drop it”… and eventually fires twice, hitting Harrell once.
  • A sad update to a story of heroism. Authorities confirm a 78-year-old man pulled from a lake on the northeast side of Indianapolis has died. Firefighters got the call late Monday afternoon and found several people had already pulled Frank Miller from the water and were performing lifesaving measures. It appears he had fallen from a boat.
  • The first debate of the presidential campaign is tonight – as several Republican hopefuls take the stage in Milwaukee. Former Vice President Mike Pence, Florida Governor Ron Desantis, Nikki Haley, Chris Christie, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Tim Scott will face each other — but not the leading GOP candidate, former President Donald Trump. He has decided not to participate, saying his commanding lead makes it unnecessary. Trump is slated to turn himself in Thursday in Georgia to face charges that accuse him of illegally trying to overturn his 2020 election loss.

  • The Dominican Republic and Haiti are taking a hard hit from Tropical Storm Franklin, with landslides and flooding a near-certainty on the island that they share. Forecasters expect Franklin to dump up to 15 inches of rain on Hispaniola. About 1,600 miles west, in Texas, Tropical Storm Harold is getting weaker now that it is ashore. It brought enough rain and wind to knock power out to several thousand homes and businesses.
  • A chippy joint practice between the Colts and Eagles ended early – after both teams cleared the benches in a donnybrook. Simmering tension boiled over when Travis Kelce shoved Zaire Franklin to the ground. An earlier scuffle put the two teams facemask to facemask, too. Kelce later said he was “ashamed” of his role in the dustup. The two teams square off tomorrow in the final game of the preseason.
