Former Crawfordsville hospital under renovation

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. (WLFI) – A dilapidated building in Crawfordsville is getting a second chance.

The city’s former hospital has sat vacant for 30 years, and now an investor is revitalizing the building into senior apartments. Work began on the project this month and crews are currently working to remove asbestos from the property. The investor is using $12 million in federal tax credits to complete the project by the end of next summer.

Crawfordsville Mayor Todd Barton said the revitalized building will have a ripple effect on the entire neighborhood.

“It certainly will recharge that neighborhood,” said Barton. “That neighborhood has really suffered, and we want to tie it to the downtown. So it breathes new life into that area.”

Barton said the city is pursuing funding to help revitalize the neighborhood surrounding the building. He said he wants to begin with infrastructure work, including sidewalk improvements.
