IFD investigating another building fire at troubled north side apartment complex

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A large fire broke out at a troubled apartment complex on the city’s north side Saturday evening, displacing around 30 residents, the Indianapolis Fire Department said.

IFD responded to the fire in the 9000 block of Lake Nora Drive East at Lakeside Pointe at Nora apartments — 9000 N. College Ave — just after 6:45 p.m.

The middle section of the apartment building was engulfed in flames.

Just before 8 p.m., IFD reported that the flames were under control.

The building has 18 units, 11 of which were occupied. There were no injuries, authorities said, but approximately 30 residents were displaced. IFD Victims Assistance worked with apartment management to find shelter for the individuals.

IFD did not immediately determine the cause of the fire but did note that there was a gas leak in the back of the building. It is unclear if the building had working smoke alarms.

Just this year, several fires have been reported at Lakeside Pointe at Nora, including one fire that destroyed the clubhouse and offices at the complex.

In July, Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita announced a lawsuit against the owner of Lakeside Pointe after an investigation found people living at the Lakeside Pointe complex suffered through fires, lack of heat and air conditioning, water damage, mold, broken windows and other uninhabitable conditions.
