Indianapolis kicks off 2020 census effort
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Two Democratic Party officials on Tuesday kicked off efforts to prepare for the 2020 census.
Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett was joined by U.S. Rep. André Carson of Indiana for a special event at the Indianapolis Public Library’s Central branch to announce the appointment of two local census co-chairs. Anthony Tony Mason of the Indianapolis Urban League and Miriam Acevedo Davis of La Plaza will work to educate people about the census and encourage high response rates.
Through the census, the government counts everyone living in the United States every 10 years. The counts are used to determine representation in washington and distribute funding.
Carson said, “In order for us, Indiana, Hoosiers and our city, to get resources federally, there is a formula composed based on the numbers and the database. The more numbers we have, the more access we have to the $600 billion.”
