Madam Walker Legacy mural to be unveiled at Indianapolis International Airport

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A towering legacy mural of Madam C.J Walker will be unveiled at the Indianapolis International Airport at 1:30 pm Tuesday.

Anyone who travels through the airport will see the 11-foot high and 75-foot wide mural displayed at Civic Plaza inside the terminal.

The Indianapolis Bicentennial Commission recognized the Madam Walker Legacy Mural as a community project last year. It was developed in partnership with the Arts Council of Indianapolis and the Madam Walker Legacy Center.

The artwork will portray Madam Walker’s lasting impact on the physical, social, cultural and economic legacy of Indiana Avenue, the iconic walker theatre and the city of Indianapolis.

The mural is a digital image created by local artist Tasha Beckwith.

“I just hope that everyone loves it and my main goal is I just want it to be an inspiration for black women and little black girls,” said Beckwith. “Any race of people, I hope, that it inspires them to follow their dreams once everyone can see it. It’s kind of hard to talk about it without people seeing it yet.”

It will be on display at the Indianapolis International Airport well into 2022.
