INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — As construction begins on the new IU Health downtown hospital and expanded campus, many street and lane closures near IU Health Methodist Hospital are scheduled to take place in the coming months, the hospital said in a statement.

The $1.6 billion new hospital is scheduled to open in 2026 and will combine operations of IU Health Methodist Hospital and the nearby University Hospital.

The statement said that a portion of Capitol Avenue will have lane restrictions until Wednesday. Sixteenth Street will have lane restrictions in the westbound lane from Wednesday until Aug. 30, and the eastbound lane from Aug. 30 until Sept. 4.

Parts of Missouri Street, Senate Avenue and 16th Street will be closed from Sept. 22 until Jan. 25. The intersection of Capitol Avenue and 16th Street will be closed from Dec. 22 until Jan. 25, the hospital said.

A portion of Capitol Avenue is scheduled to be closed from Dec. 22 to March 7. Additionally, sidewalks along 16th Street, Capitol Avenue and other nearby streets will occasionally be closed due to the construction.

Because of the utility work along 16th Street, IU Health Methodist Hospital will build a temporary access road to the emergency department that will be used by patients and emergency vehicles, the hospital said.
