Man arrested after vehicle pursuit in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) – One man was arrested following a vehicle pursuit in Columbus early Wednesday morning.

According to the Columbus Police Department, in the area of 11th Street and Washington Street an officer spotted a vehicle with expired plates just before 4 a.m. The officer then attempted to pull the vehicle, driven by 37-year-old Douglas Houchens, over. Instead of pulling over, a pursuit ensued as the vehicle ran through a number of stop signs.

Houchens eventually lost control of the vehicle and hit a curb near 22nd Street and Hawcreek Avenue. It was at that time Houchens exited the vehicle and fled the area on foot. He was apprehended by police a short time later.

Police said that at the time of his arrest, Houchens exhibited signs of being under the influence.

After being checked out at Columbus Regional Hospital, Houchens was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail. He faces a number of preliminary charges including resisting law enforcement, leaving the scene of an accident and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
