Missing Flat Rock River canoeist recovered near Geneva

GENEVA, Ind. (WISH) – According to the Indiana State Police and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, the body of a missing canoeist was recovered near Geneva Indiana Tuesday.

Around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday ISP divers located the body of James Hellums. He is the man who went missing on Jan. 4 around 9 a.m. near the Flat Rock River in Geneva. Geneva is an unincorporated community in Noble Township, which is about 16 miles south of Shelbyville.

Hellums was last seen with his white pit bull, according to police.  The pit bull was found later that day.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department began the search for Hellums after a canoe over turned in the Flat Rock River.

Police say he was last in his boat that was swept downstream. Hellums never resurfaced after his boat overturned.

The family filed a missing persons report following the incident.
