Muncie PD officer fatally shoots man

MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) — A Muncie police officer fatally shot a man on the east side of the city Friday evening, according to the Muncie Police Department.

It happened near a home in the 4200 block of East Jackson Street.

Muncie Police Department Chief Steve Stewart said in a press conference late Friday that the officer responded to a “threats call” at the home around 7:40 p.m. Stewart did not elaborate on what kind of threat was reported.

When the officer arrived, an altercation took place followed by a foot pursuit, according to Stewart. The chase ended in “a struggle” in which the officer shot and killed the man, Stewart said.

The man was identified Saturday by the coroner’s office as 26-year-old Storm Allen Smith.

When asked if Smith was armed, Stewart said, “I can’t comment.”

The male officer, who was injured, was taken to a local hospital emergency room. “I think he’ll be just fine” Stewart said, but he declined to provide an exact condition.

This is the city’s third fatal shooting in under a week.

Four people have been arrested after Muncie’s first murder of the year on Sunday. On Thursday night, police say a man died after a self-defense shooting.
