Neighbors react after car drives into pool

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A bizarre incident has landed one man in jail and a woman is fighting for her life in the hospital.

A car drove into a pool with Shainne Gaither inside on Thursday night on 16th Street near Post Road on the city’s east side.

Juan Zepeda was watching television with his youngest son when he heard a loud boom. He went outside to find out what happened.

“I look by the window. I don’t see anything, and in a second, I hear another noise in the back patio. I watch my back door and I saw the car just go into the pool,” he said.

Zepeda saw with his own eyes as the car drove into the pool. His son Bryant heard the impact.

“All I heard was like a boom. (I) thought a counter fell from upstairs and then my dad rushes toward me telling me to call 911,” he said.

Bryant called police. Within minutes they arrived. Shainne Gaither was trapped inside the car. Crews busted the driver’s side window and cut the seat belt in order to pull her from the car, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The Zepeda’s used their cell phones to record the car being pulled from their pool.

“We were feeling really scared. We were all nervous and shaking. We were like, ‘Wow. A car crashed into our pool.’ That is like, so scary,” said Bryant.

Witnesses reported a man ran from the scene, according to police. Officers arrested Solomon Keets, Jr. Police didn’t elaborate on his connection to Gaither, but say he was wanted for possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. They say his wife tried to pick him up down the street, not far from the scene.

“It was a bad night. It was not really a good night. Something I never see before. Like, never happened to me something like that,” said Juan.

Medics took Gaither to Community East Hospital. At last check, she was in critical condition.
