New Year’s gunfire hit homes, church van, cars in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — More than a half-dozen homes or cars were hit by gunfire as people rang in 2019.

The shooting came just hours after Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department warned people not to shoot their guns in celebration of the new year. IMPD said on New Year’s Eve that it is illegal, the possible charge is criminal recklessness.

News 8 looked at police reports overnight and found seven cases where either a home or a car suffered damage from a bullet. Three of those people said they believed the bullet came from a New Year’s celebratory firing.

The penalty if convicted of such a shooting can be as high as six years in prison with a $10,000 fine.

One car was hit with a bullet at a BP gas station off West 16th Street.

Another man said he found a bullet hole in his car after he attended a midnight church service. He said he heard gunshots around the start of the new year.

A police report indicates a church van sustained bullet holes at First Korean United Methodist Church.

Two separate homes in Indianapolis had bullets pierce through their ceilings.

it sounded like the ceiling was falling in,” said Marita Felder-Robison, one of those homeowners.

These two homeowners said they heard gunshots around midnight.

“Are people really shooting through people’s homes now? I mean is this really happening,” she asked.

In all these cases, no one was hurt. No one has been arrested. The NRA reports some bullets can go more than a mile before landing. That could leave lots of possibilities about where these shots came from.

On top of the seven property damage cases, News 8 reported about a woman who went to the hospital from a stray bullet in the overnight hours. Her fiancee called the gunshots ‘like a war zone.’
