Pacers Paul George headed to Olympic Games

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Two years ago this August, Paul George was dealt a major setback, breaking his leg playing for USA basketball.

They promised him an Olympic roster spot if and when he was ready and that time is now.

“I really grew up in the USA basketball program,” said George. “I’ve been there ever since my rookie year, so it meant a lot, it meant that they’re committed to me, like I’m committed to them.”

He’s committed to not only wear the red, white and blue, but to legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski.

“I got a phone call from Coach K a couple weeks ago and I found out this is his last go around. He’s been in my corner ever since the injury, even before the injury he was in my corner.”

George also likes the direction the Pacers are going, bringing in Jeff Teague and Thaddeus Young.

“I just think we’re carrying on with what coach Frank was pushing for,” added George. “That’s play up-tempo, play a faster style. We got that in one of the quickest point guards in the league and one of the most versatile power forwards in the league, so that’s the direction we’re going, and I feel comfortable with it.”

As for Team USA, George says he’s as healthy as he’s ever been, he wants to play with Kevin Durant and win gold, but will he think about his injury when he gets back at it with the team?

“There’s always a risk, there’s a risk putting my shoes on every day, there’s always a risk but I don’t play the game looking at injuries, I play the game because I love it.”

His journey continues July 17 with training camp in Las Vegas on the road to Rio.
