Photo of racial slur at Indianapolis Michaels store goes viral
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Michaels craft store responded after a racist slur found at one of its Indianapolis stores went viral.
A Facebook user, Bridgette Drake, posted a photo of the word n—– spelled out on a shelf using craft letters.
When asked about the message, an employee laughed and said it was “hilarious,” Drake wrote.
24-Hour News 8 reached out to Drake but did not hear back.
She said in her post the photo came from the store on East Washington Street.
She said she was offended and angry over the employee’s response.
Michaels responded with the following statement Sunday:
Michaels does not tolerate discrimination in any form. In regards to the incident that is circulating on social media, we spoke with both the customer and the associate this morning and are taking this incident extremely seriously and are investigating. Racism has no place in our stores.
The store said Monday evening an employee did not arrange the wooden letters to form the word.
Here is their updated response:
Discrimination has no place in our society, and we appreciate the passion of our customers in condemning it. We have conducted a thorough investigation of this incident and have determined that the letters were not arranged by a Michaels associate. However, our associate’s response to the situation did not meet our standards. We regret that the incident occurred, and we have taken disciplinary action.
