Police respond to hundreds of accidents as snow covers Indiana roads

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – It’s been a busy Saturday for snow crews and first responders as central Indiana was pelted with half a foot of snow.

Since midnight, officers with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to 275 crashes because of the weather.

That number includes 18 personal injury accidents, 178 property damage accidents, 18 no information accidents and 61 slide-offs.

State police in the Indianapolis district said their officers had responded 121 crashes (one fatal, 10 with injury) and 34 slide-offs.

Meanwhile, Indiana Department of Transportation and the Indianapolis Department of Public Works have been busy plowing and salting roads.

INDOT said a full callout of 200 salt trucks will remain on the roads until 9 a.m. Sunday.

Scott Manning with INDOT said plows on Saturday were trying to keep up with the snow.

Crews were especially focused on getting slush that built up after salting, off the roads.

“Our goal over the next few hours is to push as much of that off as possible so that we have dry roadways over night reduce that risk for potential of refreezing and black ice, things of that nature. We’re continuing to actively work this system. We still have some snowfall coming down and we’re expecting a little bit more through the night and maybe even into the morning. So we’re not out of the woods yet,” said Manning.

Another helpful tool for drivers is the Indy Snow Force Viewer. The website shows in real time where snow plows have been and how long ago the roads were plowed.

An overnight freeze and possible slick spots were expected Sunday morning.
