Popular Indy Zoo ride reopens after 1 year closure

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A popular ride at the Indianapolis Zoo is set to officially reopen Friday. The skyline has been closed since July 30, 2015 after it broke down with people on board for the third time in less than a year.

Rob Shumaker is the director of the Zoo. He says they’ve inspected every part of the ride since then, and they’ve done upgrades to make it more reliable and keep you safe.

The Skyline has gondolas that circle the orangutan center. It allows people to see the orangutans as they travel along the Myrta Pulliam Hutan Trail, a network of cables and bridges above the zoo.

Shumaker says they’ve replaced tires that propel the gondolas around the track and upgraded the ride’s communication center.

He says those were two of the things that caused issues in the past.
