Re-investigation of crash scene turns up dead body

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A report of a missing person prompted police to re-investigate a crash scene. That investigation turned up the missing man’s body.

The body of 59-year-old Lyle Sauers was found in a ditch in the 900 block of Farabee Court South. Lafayette police said a wreck occurred there Tuesday morning involving a van hitting a tree. Police suspected it was a hit and run because the driver was nowhere to be found.

Later that night, Sauers’ roommate reported him missing.

Police went back to the scene of the wreck and found Sauers’ body nearby. Police said they do not believe another vehicle was involved in the wreck. There’s also no evidence Sauers was thrown from the vehicle when it wrecked.

An autopsy will be performed this week.
