Russiaville to mark 50th anniversary of Palm Sunday tornado

RUSSIAVILLE, Ind. (AP) – Survivors of a deadly 1965 tornado and their families will share their stories as part of an event marking the 50th anniversary of the deadly storm.

The Kokomo Tribune reports the gathering Saturday in Russiaville will include presentations by meteorologists and a discussion of what to include in an emergency preparedness kit.

Russiaville Historical Society President Marsha Berry said the event also will feature a panel discussion on the storm, its consequences and the rebuilding process.

The storm that struck Russiaville on Palm Sunday in April 1965 damaged hundreds of homes and nearly wiped out the business district.

The Russiaville tornado was part of an outbreak across the Midwest that killed hundreds and injured at least 1,500.
