Sheriff’s son appears in court for narcotics case

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Nikolas Layton, the son of Marion County Sheriff John Layton and a now-former Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer, appeared in court Tuesday morning for the narcotics case against him and two other people.

Layton, Christopher Reed and Veronica Purdy all had initial hearings at 9 a.m. The trio face a series of charges related to dealing drugs.

Layton remained silent as he left the courtroom Tuesday morning. He resigned from IMPD following his arrest in the case and a special prosecutor was requested due to Sheriff Layton’s professional and personal relationship with Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry.

Layton, Reed and Purdy are accused of distributing drugs over a period of several days. Authorities say the arrests were the result of a months-long investigation.

They’re due back in court the first week in June.
