Shots fired at IMPD district headquarters overnight

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Dozens of gunshots were fired at an Indianapolis police district headquarters building late Tuesday night.

The IMPD Northwest District headquarters at 3821 Industrial Boulevard was hit multiple times by bullets, leaving several windows damaged.

Police say an SUV was reported leaving the scene, but officers do not have suspect information.

Evidence markers dotted the road outside the headquarters as police investigated.

No one was hurt.

IMPD Chief Troy Riggs said his officers are doing fine after the shooting.

“They are doing tremendously well. No one’s called in sick, no one’s not showed up for work. They’re in good spirits,” Riggs said.

During a public announcement about the attacks, Mayor Joe Hogsett spoke in support of the police and the department’s ongoing public outreach.

This year the department has made a concerted effort to connect with the public through strategies like beat policing and social media outreach.

In a statement, Hogsett said:

Last night was another sobering example of the dangers that face the brave men and women of IMPD every single time they put on their uniform to protect and serve this city. It was also a reminder that even as we seek to build bridges between officers and neighborhoods through community policing, there are an unfortunate few who still seek to divide us against ourselves.

Let me be clear: Indianapolis will not tolerate the reckless actions of any individual who directs violence toward our law enforcement officers. They will be found and they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

As federal prosecutor, I saw first-hand the sacrifices that police officers and their families make in the name of public service, and I urge Indianapolis to come together and show complete support and appreciation for what IMPD does each and every day.”

Some residents that live near the Northwest District had no knowledge of the shooting. 24-Hour News 8 spoke to James Merriweather who was surprised to hear about the shooting.

Merriweather said that he was concerned that the shooting could even happen.

But Riggs was positive this morning, saying his officers are used to the violence.

“They’re used to this unfortunately,” Riggs said. “Maybe not having their headquarters or homes shot up, but they realize there are people out there that will do that.”

Riggs said he didn’t need to motivate his officers this morning, they were committed to finding the person or persons responsible.

“If an individual will do this to a police department, imagine what kind of havoc they’re causing out in the community,” Riggs said.
