Sleeping precipitates accident with police SUV

ROCHESTER, Ind. (WISH) – An on-duty Fulton County sheriff’s deputy was rear-ended Tuesday morning after the other driver fell asleep at the wheel, according to police officials.

A police officer was driving his 2009 Ford Expedition at approximately 7:40 a.m. on northbound State Road 25, near County Road 100 South, when he was rear-ended by a northbound 1998 Ford F-150 pick-up truck.

After a short investigation, Fulton County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police reported that the driver of the truck, Mathias Gaumer, 48, of Monticello, stated that he fell asleep and did not brake before crashing into the SUV.

Neither driver was injured in the accident.

Gaumer was given two citations – one for following another vehicle too closely and one for failure to provide proof of financial responsibility.
