Snow, sleet, freezing rain moving in

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Thursday morning commute could be tricky with winter weather set to move in overnight.

Tonight

Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect starting during the early overnight and going through Thursday evening.

A storm system will move in from the south around just before midnight Wednesday for our southern counties and after midnight for the I-70 corridor. We should see this start as snow before changing over to sleet and, at times, freezing rain. We’ll likely see more consistent snow for our northern and western counties where snow accumulations will be higher.

For the Indianapolis metro area, the big concern leading into the Thursday morning commute will be sleet and freezing rain. Watch for icy spots for the drive in, especially on elevated surfaces, bridges and overpasses, on- and off-ramps, sidewalks and parking lots. Those will likely be places where ice could easily accumulate, especially since road temperatures will be just hovering around the freezing mark.

We will see a pretty steady dose of sleet, freezing rain or both for the morning commute before the precip winds down by the early afternoon. We’ll be left with scattered snow showers, rain showers or both through the evening hours. Most of the damage will be done through late morning Thursday.

Ice accumulations will be a glaze to up to a tenth of an inch for the southern half of the state.

Snow accumulations will be higher to the west and north, where sleet and freezing rain will be limited.

8 day forecast:

Conditions will quiet down heading into the weekend. Numbers will bump back to the lower to middle 40s through Saturday. Isolated showers are possible on Sunday. The holiday week looks dry and warmer, possibly pushing 50 degrees by Thanksgiving.
