Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says officers responded to multiple shots fired and found six people were shot in different areas around the scene near the intersection of Illinois and Maryland streets.

Officers patrolling the area were able to respond quickly and help the victims.

According to police, the shooter, who is believed to be a juvenile, began shooting just north of the intersection of West Maryland and North Illinois Street before fleeing the scene.

Police say they are working with witnesses and victims to figure out what led up to the shooting and to identify a suspect.

A surveillance image of a person of interest in the case was released Sunday morning. Authorities are asking the public for help in identifying the male subject. He is described as wearing a dark colored sweatshirt with light stripes on the sleeves and dark jeans.

Police will also be reviewing surveillance video for additional clues.

IMPD says this type of violence will not be tolerated.

“It’s unacceptable for downtown. It’s not acceptable for anywhere in Indianapolis,” said IMPD public information officer Genae Cook. “This person just started shooting we don’t know why, we don’t know if there was a disturbance right beforehand. We’re still trying to learn that.”

Despite multiple people being shot, police do not believe this is a mass shooting situation.

Three other victims were injured in two separate shootings hours later in Indianapolis. No suspect information has been released related to those shootings. All victims are in stable condition.

IMPD Police Chief Bryan Roach released the following statement following the violent night:

“The disregard for human life and inability to emotionally handle conflict last night is past feeling. Constant monitoring and community involvement of our youth downtown was successful all summer. Individual decisions last night are reflective of few of our youth.  Let’s celebrate our youth and address those unable to process the importance of their own young lives. Let’s all do our part.”

The violent night prompted Indy Mayor Joe Hogsett and State Sen. Jim Merritt to speak out.

Mayor Hogsett said Saturday night’s violence has “no place in our city,” adding that it will “take all of Indianapolis working together in order to turn back the tide of violence…”

Merritt called the violence “unacceptable” and held a press conference Sunday morning at the site where the shooting took place.
