Teacher encourages reading with ‘I Love to Read Program’
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – For 25 years 24-Hour News 8 has encouraged young readers through the “I Love to Read Program.”
Monday, we got the chance to read to a kindergarten class at Indiana Math and Science Academy (IMSA West) that is taking part in the program. They were great listeners during story time, and they had lots of great questions too.
Their teacher Laura Nelson says she puts so much effort into making reading fun, because when she was their age, reading always felt like a chore.
“We read every day, we do all kinds of silly things with reading,” said Nelson. “We incorporate the reading goal of 7,500 books in 75 days, and have guest readers come from the community, they want a hundred, that was their choice.”
Nelson says this is the fourth year she’s set reading goals and had outside readers come in to encourage the students. They have several more weeks to reach their goal of reading 7500 books.
Nelson says many of her students come back year after year and ask for reading lists, so they can read on their own.
