Traveling Vietnam veterans memorial seeks volunteers
GREENFIELD, Ind (WISH) — Volunteers are needed to help out with a traveling war memorial that’ll be making its way to central Indiana this summer.
The Wall That Heals is a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. The replica travels around the country. This summer, it’ll be in Greenfield, attracting maybe tens of thousands of people. So, they’re asking for volunteers.
At the Stillinger Family Funeral Home, they’re making room for The Wall That Heals.
“It’s pretty big. It was here in 2005. It was half-scale at the time, and this will be the second year the larger size is actually going to be out,” said funeral home owner David Stillinger.
The traveling memorial is a three-quarter scale replica. It’s 375 feet long and 7 feet, 6 inches, high. Just like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the replica features the names of more than 58,000 Vietnam veterans, including seven from Hancock County.
Stillinger Family Funeral Home is looking for about 200 people who can give a few hours of their time to help out.
“They’ll do anything from help setting up the war memorial, to take it down, to be security at night. The war memorial is never alone. It’s always got somebody there at night,” Stillinger said.
Stillinger said he sees it as one last opportunity to say thank you to those who paid the ultimate price.
“They are what have made my life so great. I feel like it’s a small thing to do to honor the Vietnam veterans and any other veterans that want to come and remember those that were lost,” Stillinger said.
The Wall that Heals is scheduled to be in Greenfield from July 11-14. A SignUp page has been set up to volunteer.
