Two people killed in White County crashes

WHITE CO., Ind. (WISH/WLFI) – Indiana State Police report two people are dead after several crashes on Interstate 65 near the State Road 18 exit.

It all started just before 10 p.m. Tuesday at mile marker 188. Multiple semi-trailer trucks and cars were involved. ISP said speed and foggy weather may have been the cause.

Emergency responders said that other people were hurt. State police believe the first fatality happened in an initial crash, then the second fatality happened in a pileup crash.

The initial crash involved a silver Acura and a semi. The driver of the Acura was pronounced dead at the scene and the front passenger was seriously injured. A child in the back seat was uninjured.

The second crash involved six semis, a van and two cars. Police say the driver in the first semi hit the rear of the second semi causing the cargo of the first semi to come lose and crash through the cab, which killed the driver. According to police, at least two semi drivers and several others were taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Weather conditions at the time of the crash were extremely foggy. Police believe drivers were trying to stop for the initial crash, which caused the other crashes.

A total of 15 semis, five cars and two vans were involved in at least three separate crashes.

The northbound lanes of I-65 from the 178 exit to the 193 were still closed. The southbound lanes of I-65 were closed from the 201 exit to the 188 exit.

The names of the victims were not release as of Wednesday morning.

It wasn’t immediately clear when lanes would reopen.
