Witnesses describe Monday’s shooting, chase scene
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department representatives said their officers fired about 200 rounds in a gunfight with a suspect who shot one of their officers and led police on a chase.
It happened Monday evening around 6:30. Police said they eventually shot and killed the suspect, 33-year-old Jeff Tyson.
Police said they stopped the car Tyson was driving at 71st Street and Georgetown Road. IMPD representatives said the car is connected to an armed robber from last week.
Police said they told Tyson to get out, and when he refused and became unruly, they fired pepper spray into the car.
Tyson then led police on a 15 mile chase, engaging in a gunfight with officers along the way.
Police said Tyson shot one officer in the leg. That’s when police said they returned fire.
One woman who lives in the area, Marcelia Davis, said it sounded like something you’d hear in a movie.
“I didn’t have time to react, I just got my son and ducked,” said Davis. She said she had been out on the front porch, but ran inside to take cover.
On Tuesday a memorial was set up near where Tyson was eventually shot and killed by police. At least one neighboring home still had visible bullet holes.
“There’s kids they play in the field, I mean it was pretty live out here at the time. It’s tragic. It could have been way worse than what it was,” said Davis.
The officer who was hit by gunfire is expected to recover.
