George Mallet
George Mallet is a longtime journalist who launched his career at the Associated Press’s headquarters in New York’s Rockefeller Plaza as a news clerk. Fascinated by television news, it wasn’t long before he took his Underwood typewriter across the street to NBC News to serve as a news feature assistant on NBC Nightly News and the Today Show.
George’s on-air career began in Agana, Guam where he reported for KUAM-TV. The stint in the South Pacific, though, didn’t last long. Freaked out by beetles the size of International Harvester tractors and giant snakes, George cut his losses, returning to the mainland. After a brief period driving a school bus and chronicling his experiences for The Wilmington News Journal, George took an assignment as a reporter for WITN in Washington, NC. After two years in Little Washington, George moved to WTVD in Raleigh-Durham where he covered every hurricane to pound the crystal coast during his decade-long tenure. George got his first taste of overseas reporting at WTVD when he was dispatched to the Soviet Union to cover the “Moscow Music Peace Festival.”
George followed his ten years at WTVD with ten years at Fox 29 in Philadelphia. There, George won two Emmy Awards for spot news coverage. When a Philadelphia colt named Smarty Jones won the Kentucky Derby, George began covering a streak of standout racehorses from the Philadelphia area competing in the Triple Crown classics including Smarty, Afleet Alex, Barbaro, Hard Spun and Eight Bells. In 2003, George became one of the co-hosts of Good Day Philadelphia serving in that position until 2007 when he moved to the Midwest. While working in Philadelphia, George was again tapped for an overseas assignment, going to the Vatican to cover the canonization of Philadelphia’s Mother Katherine Drexel.
A writer first, George has continued to publish stories for The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Delaware Today Magazine, and Bloodhorse Magazine. His assignments for Bloodhorse included the story of his own horse, Brahma Fear, a grandson of Secretariat. George chronicled the horse’s birth, fell in love with him and grabbed him off the track at the conclusion of Brahma’s 39-race career. George has a son named Colton who was born in 2012 and shares a birthday with Brahma Fear. Colton is a standout hockey player in greater Milwaukee where he lives with his mother. George and his wife, Kathi, live in Carmel. Kathi is an experienced equestrian who competes in three-day eventing.
