Pippa Mann crashes at IMS, is uninjured
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH/AP) – IndyCar driver Pippa Mann spun her car into the wall at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Wednesday, the second scary crash of the day during practice for the Indianapolis 500.
The English driver was checked and released from the infield medical center.
She lost control of her car coming out of the fourth turn, spun and hit the inside wall, then slid up the track and made a hard sideways hit with the attenuator in pit lane.
She stayed in the cockpit for several minutes, but was able to walk away under her own power.
Mann said she knew she was going to hit the end of the pit wall.
“It was completely my fault. When you don’t get in the race car too often sometimes you get things wrong. My guys did not need this,” said Mann.
She didn’t know if her team would have to rebuild the car that crashed, or if she would drive a new one. “Stay tuned,” she told 24-Hour News 8.
Mann, who is with Dale Coyne Racing, has not raced since last May at Indy.
Earlier Wednesday, Helio Castroneves was involved in a crash in which his car went airborne. He was not seriously injured.
