More Marsh stores to close

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — More Marsh supermarkets are closing.

The company says it’s shutting down four stores, located in Indianapolis, Fishers, Mooresville and Lafayette, due to low sales.

What’s been a Marsh hometown grocer for years will now be up for sale on Lynhurst St. on the West side of Indianapolis, leaving the adjoining strip center without an anchor store.

But owners at Rockhurst Barber say they are not worried about any impact on business.

“A lot of people in this community already kind of know where we are, we’ve established our name and our great haircuts, so I don’t really feel like Marsh will play a big impact on us at all,” said Gina Cook, owner of the shop.

This follows eight other closings by the Indianapolis-based supermarket chain last year. Marsh attributed those closings to lackluster sales as well. Several of those buildings remain vacant months later.

It’s been more than a year since customers last passed through the doors to the one-time Marsh location on Thompson Road in Franklin Township.

Half of the property now houses an Ollie’s outlet store. The Planet Fitness gym on the other side told us it has plans to expand into its other half this summer.

And while the plants at Rural King on U.S. 31 in Greenwood are showing signs of life, the former Marsh store next door does not.

“It’s been a long time, it’s been sitting empty for a long time,” said Jake Reynolds, a Greenwood resident.

The property remains up for sale and residents hope for another grocer to take its place.

“A lot of people wish there would be another one coming in, everybody I’ve talked to,” said Randll Walker, also a Greenwood resident.

A Marsh spokesperson told us that there are no plans to their knowledge about future developments in the properties that will close soon, but many current business owners look forward to the opportunity it presents.

“I am definitely excited about being able to find something that will go over there that will be able to boost that for us even more,” said Cook.

Marsh said in a statement that while they are closing those stores, they’re going to “aggressively invest” in the stores that remain open.
