More than 10,000 gather to join hands in solidarity with Charleston
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – More than 10,000 people gathered to join hands Sunday, June 21, 2015 in a sign of solidarity after Wednesday’s shooting that left nine dead at Emanuel AME Church.
The Bridge to Peace Unity event gathered at Ravenel Bridge and drew thousands from the Charleston community, and many from across the country who wanted to show support against the hate crime allegedly committed by suspect Dylann Roof.

Charleston native and future “Late Show” host, Stephen Colbert, was among the supporters. He tweeted a video of his walk on the bridge to promote, “Peace and love and unity in the Holy City.”
Event organizer Lauren Vicars said in a statement: “As a mom, I can’t stand the thought of my kids growing up in a world with this kind of violence, hatred and fear. I refuse to sit back and allow one person to tarnish the love that Charlestonians are capable of and known for. The Bridge of Unity – this is who we are.”
