Forum to teach preparedness for active shooter situations

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – There’s an opportunity in Hamilton County Tuesday to learn how to prepare in the case of an active shooter situation, following last week’s mass shooting in California.

Indiana State Police will host a free public forum on an unarmed response to an active shooter event. They say they typically present this program to school systems across the state, but this will be a first of its kind forum for the community presented by ISP.

The forum is designed to give people an opportunity to ask questions of law enforcement, voice concerns, and to and help them prepare. Troopers say the presentation will expand the “Run, Hide, Fight” scenario they recommend in case of an active shooter situation.

State Police say you should try to evacuate if you have a safe path. Have an escape plan in mind.

They say make yourself a difficult target: don’t freeze or cower. The main goal is to limit contact with the shooter.

If escaping is not an option at the moment, they recommend finding a hiding place where the active shooter is less likely to find you.

At last resort, if your life is in danger, they say try to fight, disrupt the shooter, yell, throw things or improvise weapons.

The Indiana State Police community forum takes place Tuesday Dec. 8 at the Sheridan Community Center on East 6th Street at 7 p.m. They say the content is not recommended for kids under 14.
