Back to school for Amy Beverland students

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Students and staff returned to Amy Beverland Elementary Monday morning.

This comes nearly a week after the school’s Principal Susan Jordan died in a tragic bus accident. According to police, a bus struck Jordan as she pushed children out of the way after the bus jumped the curb.

Classes were canceled for three days as the school mourned. On Thursday the school held a prayer vigil, on Friday visitation services were held followed by a funeral on Saturday.

On Sunday evening, Lawrence Township School introduced students and parents to the school’s new interim principal Mrs. Connie Thomas. According to the district, Thomas and Jordan were longtime friends.

Inside the school students were greeted by a support staff, therapy dogs and of course their new principal.

“The goal for today was to have a smooth transition and to get our students quickly back into their routine”, said Thomas.

“The second goal is continuing to provide the support needed for our teachers, our staff, and our students,” Angela Crousore, assistant to the Principal added. “Much about Amy Beverland will remain the same. Yes, the important stuff like who we are and why we’re here will remain the same.”

Counselors also rode the school bus with students during the trip.
