Police: Bus driver forgot to put on parking brake in fatal crash

LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) — A crash report from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department indicates that the bus driver mistakenly forgot to put on the parking brake before a crash that killed a school principal.

An IMPD crash report states that the bus driver was prepared to leave the student loading area at Amy Beverland Elementary School on Jan. 27. The driver then got out of the driver’s seat without putting on the parking brake, causing the bus to move forward, injuring two students and killing principal Susan Jordan.

The driver was then transported to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital for a blood draw.

An inspection by Indiana State Police didn’t reveal any mechanical problems on the bus.
