IMPD unveils new neighborhood walking beats
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis police announced the implementation of a new three-year plan Wednesday.
Beginning in late April when new recruits hit the streets, IMPD will add 19 new walking beats.
Many of the areas were selected based on crime and quality of life data.
There will also be four entertainment zones, including Broad Ripple, Fountain Square, Mass. Ave. and South Meridian.
“They’re going to be in those areas and they’re going to stay in those areas,” IMPD Chief Troy Riggs said. “[The officers will] get to meet business owners, get to meet the individuals who live there, go to community meetings; and really become immersed and engaged in that community. I want people who live in these areas, when they pick up the phone to call the police department, they’re thinking of a particular officer.”
Riggs says the goal of the new beat system is to reduce crime, reduce the fear of crime and enhance public safety.
“The key to increased trust and safer streets is an integrated, neighborhood – based approach to public safety,” Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said. “When the men and women of IMPD start walking their beats next month, they will get to know the neighborhoods they police, learn firsthand about the challenges and opportunities of a community and establish relationships that will lead to greater communication.”
