Indianapolis Zoo closing polar bear exhibit

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis Zoo is closing its polar bear exhibit.

The Zoo announced the decision to permanently close the exhibit Monday morning.

The exhibit, which opened in 1988, was in need of updating. For their 29-year-old polar bear Tundra, updating meant relocation.

The Zoo’s veterinary staff said they carefully reviewed all of the options and agreed the Detroit Zoo was the perfect facility for Tundra’s needs as a senior bear. They said the Detroit Zoo offers large spaces and pools with easy slopes for Tundra to enter and exit.

Tundra arrived at the Indianapolis Zoo in 1988. She will be moved to the Detroit Zoo sometime after June 22.
