Bullet holes discovered in Islamic Society sign

PLAINFIELD, Ind. (WISH) – There is additional security on hand at the Islamic Society of North America in Plainfield. It’s the result of another case of vandalism.

Since the terrorist attack in Orlando last weekend there has been an increase in what a spokeswoman calls “nasty messages” directed at the Islamic Society. Those messages come via email and social media.

Thursday night, one of the leaders of the Islamic Society spotted damage in a sign outside the mosque.

Workers arriving Friday morning and discovered four bullet holes that will force the Islamic Society to repair or replace the sign.

Spokeswoman Faryal Khatri says there is still a desire to keep the facility open and to continue fostering relationships with rest of the community.

“Even though we’re facing a backlash, we’re still reeling,” she said, “and we’re still really saddened by the incident that happened in Orlando, and we understand that the victims, the families, are going through a lot more, and we don’t want this to sort of overshadow that.”

The Islamic Society was also the target of vandalism in March when surveillance video showed three people spray painting ethnic and religious slurs on the side of the building.

Plainfield police have been notified again and are now investigating the damage to the sign.

Additional security will also be on hand during the remainder of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month. It runs until July 5.
