Vacant home near New Haven destroyed in fire

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) A vacant house caught fire Monday morning  just before 5 a.m. New Haven firefighters responded to the fire at Spillson Avenue and Crown Street between Maplecrest and Parrott roads.

When firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed. Crews fought the fire from the outside because of unsafe conditions inside the one-story home. The house is a total loss.

On June 27, an abandoned house in the same neighborhood burned to the ground. Firefighters were only able to fight the fire from the outside because the center of the home was destroyed.

At the time, the New Haven Fire Department said it was the second house fire on Madge Avenue in two weeks. It’s not far from where a string of vacant house fires have plagued three neighborhoods.

The Blackhawk neighborhood has seen more than a dozen fires at vacant houses. The latest blaze destroyed a home on Blackhawk Lane.

House fires have also happened on Oakhurst Drive and Walden Run, both across the street from the Blackhawk neighborhood.

Fort Wayne Fire Department officials believe the fires were set intentionally and have two persons of interest, but no charges have been filed.

All of the fires are still under investigation.
